About me

My name is Jonathan Stoddern and I have been teaching mathematics to secondary school students since 2008.  Prior to that I studied maths at Imperial College, London.  From 2008 until 2016 I worked in central London and since 2016 I have worked at a South Buckinghamshire grammar school where I have previously been Subject Leader for maths and also an Assistant Head Teacher.  I have stepped away from the responsibility of Assistant Head in order to focus on my three young children and also tutoring.  During my sixteen years in the classroom I have taught students of all abilities from years 7 to 13.

I have successfully prepared students for maths and maths related degrees at Oxford, Cambridge and other top universities.  I have supported students to achieve top grades in GCSE and A level who previously doubted their mathematical abilities.

I have also worked with students preparing for UKMT competitions, including the British Mathematical Olympiad rounds 1 and 2.

Outside of my teaching I am a married father of three young children.  I love to read and I love to be outdoors.  I have competed in triathlons and running races and I love the mountains, with Scottish Winter and Summer Alpine climbing being an important part of my life.  I am currently learning the piano, with my 8 year old son.  Having recently passed grade 1, I am due to take grade 2 shortly and hope to have completed grade 3 by the end of 2024.
